Germany at the end of the 19th century: The childless widower Count Ferdinand von Hardenstein faces the decline of his noble lineage – and with it, his estate Hohensandau and its porcelain factory. Meanwhile, in Berlin, the minor noblewoman Elisabetha von Flatow is searching for a good match and is eventually introduced to Count Hardenstein by the Emperor himself. A marriage to Elisabetha could solve all of the Count's problems. At the same time, however, a stable hand from the Hohensandau estate uncovers a great secret: the Countess of Hohensandau, who died in an accident during a journey, had given birth to a daughter before her death. Yet, the Count knows nothing of his child, the porcelain heiress.
