Product details
The renowned mycologist takes us on her journeys through 22 biotopes where she has discovered the most mushrooms on the island of La Palma. Each biotope is accessible via an easy walk, accompanied by concise, clear directions and photos. In the second chapter of the book, she reveals further secrets: in the overview of all the mushrooms discovered on La Palma so far, she also includes the biotope where many of the mushrooms were found. She was unable to reconstruct all the locations for mushrooms found by others. This is a treasure for experts and anyone else interested. Since the 1970s, the passionate mycologist has published identification books. Until she was in her early 90s, she continued to hike and guided mycologists from around the world to the biotopes she described, showcasing both well-known and rare mushroom species, giving lectures, and organizing events. The author moved to La Palma in the late 1970s. La Palma is considered a mushroom paradise with ideal growing conditions: the cloud waterfall, the pines that filter water from the clouds, and chestnut groves. The effects of the Chernobyl reactor disaster have not impacted her as they have in parts of Germany. There are many species; the researcher has counted around 1,500 on the island, including some that do not exist in the rest of Europe. Rose Marie Dähncke has discovered 33 previously unknown and now described species on La Palma, along with others that are still undescribed. Even though she can no longer hike and discover on her own, she is confident that many more exist. Mushrooms are unique beings that play an important role in the ecosystem.
