Three physicists live disguised as mentally ill patients in a private psychiatric clinic. One of them has made a discovery that poses a threat of world destruction, while the other two want to extract this secret from him. To protect their secrets, they are not above committing murder, but the clinic director, Dr. Mathilde von Zahnd, is one step ahead of them. Dürrenmatt links the fundamental question of the play regarding the responsibility of science with his theory of drama, which states that any action triggered by chance must take the worst possible turn.
