Die Pest geht um

Marburg 1612 - Lukas von Wegener, a sought-after astrologer and polymath, travels with his wife Luzia to Thuringia. In the town of Mühlhausen, a traveling physician has predicted a plague epidemic, and Lukas is supposed to refute him with a horoscope. They are met with apocalyptic conditions; the populace is rebellious and immoral. To make matters worse, Luzia is recognized as a former thief, but she also receives unexpected help. The city officials are convinced that the physician has caused the plague through witchcraft. The only chance to save him from the stake seems to be an antidote, the discovery of which Lukas prematurely announces. Too rashly, as it soon becomes clear, for the Duke's envoy demands a universal remedy from Lukas - the Philosopher's Stone.
