Die Outsider

Fourteen-year-old Ponyboy Curtis lives alone with his older brothers Soda and Darry since their parents died in a car accident. Ponyboy is a Greaser - a term for the youth from the slums of the city who are engaged in an ongoing petty war against the arrogant Socs from the wealthy families of the West Side. This war leaves not only visible wounds but also scars on the soul: the nervous Johnny is terrified of the Socs ever since they brutally beat him up.

One evening, when Pony and Johnny are attacked by some drunken Socs, Johnny snaps and stabs one of the other boys. Together with Ponyboy, he flees the city and hides in an old wooden church. There, a second catastrophe occurs: while trying to save some children from the burning church, Johnny is severely injured. For Ponyboy, winning a big battle against the Socs is no longer as important. Through Johnny's death, he begins to understand how pointless hatred and violence truly are.
