The term "New Objectivity" became synonymous with the cultural awakening of the 1920s and the rationality and factual precision observable in art, as well as in architecture, design, photography, and literature. Gustav F. Hartlaub coined this term in 1925 with an exhibition that became its namesake. One hundred years later, the exhibition shown at the Kunsthalle Mannheim will be critically examined and digitally reconstructed. In addition to works by central artists such as Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, and George Grosz, overlooked positions, particularly by female artists like Anita Rée and Lotte Laserstein, will also be presented. The perspective will also be expanded topographically, including Switzerland and Italy, as well as temporally into the 1930s and early 1940s. The publication promises a visual immersion into a formative style period and provides insight into the current state of research on central questions of New Objectivity.
