Many people today are aware of the Jewish and political victims of National Socialism, and possibly also of the persecution of homosexuals as well as the Sinti and Roma. However, the social-racist persecution of those whom the National Socialists deemed genetically inferior and thus "expendable," as well as "asocials" and "professional criminals," is largely unknown. These individuals were imprisoned in concentration camps as inmates marked with a green or black triangle, a fabric triangle worn on the left side of their striped prisoner uniforms. This book not only vividly describes the historical and political backgrounds and the persecution of these individuals during National Socialism, but it also explains why they were excluded from any moral and legal recognition in the Federal Republic of Germany for decades—until the German Bundestag finally acknowledged them as victims of National Socialism in 2020, 70 years late. Through moving accounts from twenty descendants who tell the stories of their respective ancestors, the biographies of individual victims are presented for the first time in the history of memory culture publications—showing how the trauma of these denied victims continues to affect families to this day.
