Richard Bach, born in 1935 in Oak Park, Illinois, discovered his love for flying at the age of seventeen. At eighteen, he was trained as a jet pilot. He was a demonstration pilot and flight instructor, publishing hundreds of essays about his passionately pursued profession, until he achieved worldwide success with his first book, Jonathan Livingston Seagull.
