Early summer: Hotel owner Holger Simonsmeyer, accused of murdering a young woman from his hometown of Trenthin, is acquitted. He and his family hope that this means everything is finally over. However, distrust reigns in the village, and few believe in the hotelier's innocence. Then, another young girl is found murdered.

Late summer: Shocked, journalist Doro Kagel stands before the ruins of a burned-down house in Trenthin. Months ago, Bettina Simonsmeyer had urgently asked her to report as thoroughly on her husband's acquittal as she had on the murder trial. Doro had declined. Now, the family has paid a terrible blood price. Plagued by guilt, Doro begins to reopen the case.
