Ernst Mach (1838 to 1916) was a physicist, philosopher, and science theorist. He is primarily known today for the Mach number, which describes the multiple of speed relative to the speed of sound. In addition to physics, he was deeply engaged in philosophy. He is considered one of the most influential representatives and co-founders of Empiriocriticism. In the field of psychology, he made a name for himself as a pioneer of Gestalt psychology and Gestalt theory.
