In E. M. Forster's dystopia, people live in an underground, enclosed world with all comforts: life is perfectly regulated by the services of the "Machine." People no longer have a need for personal encounters; communication occurs solely through the Machine, which watches over everything. Its manual has become a kind of Bible, and people are trapped in their absolute dependence on technology, which they can no longer control. However, gradually the knowledge behind the Machine is lost, and the system becomes vulnerable to malfunctions. E. M.
