Product details

The painting of the Renaissance in Germany owes its fame to the great names of art history: Albrecht Dürer, Lucas Cranach, Albrecht Altdorfer, Hans Holbein, Hans Baldung Grien, and Grünewald - each of them a strong and distinctive artistic personality. In dialogue with Italy, they discover around 1500 a breathtakingly sensual and profound new world, which they attempt to capture in atmospheric landscapes, vibrant portraits, grand altarpieces, and narrative history paintings. They work at the imperial court of Maximilian in Vienna and Innsbruck, at the courts of German princes, in the trading metropolises of Nuremberg, Frankfurt, Strasbourg, and in Augsburg of the Fuggers, forming painting schools like the Danube School and spreading their new artistic ideas beyond the borders of Germany to Italy. The entire splendor and diversity, but also the profundity of painting and drawing art north of the Alps unfolds here in 166 full-page color plates - in the demonic images of Hans Baldung Grien, the visionary Isenheim Altarpiece by Mathis Grünewald, and in the pictorial inventions of the Reformation, which give the painting of the 16th century its own distinctive character. The book, written by art historians Anne-Marie Bonnet and Gabriele Kopp-Schmidt, published in 2010, has since become a standard work of German cultural history.
