Abbess Isabelle de Melancourt guards a secret in her forest monastery. Leopold von Gordean and his order of knights are convinced that it is the hiding place of the Holy Grail. They raid the monastery, kill several nuns, and capture Isabelle and the others. The novice Justina manages to escape and sets out on Isabelle's behalf to seek help from the Würzburg prince-bishop Johann von Brunn. The Grand Master's henchmen catch up with her and intend to kill her. At that moment, the former wandering whore Marie and her husband Michel intervene. The two have no idea that Justina's rescue will mark the beginning of a perilous journey for them, where death is always lurking.
