Waechter, F. K.: The Last Things F. K. Waechter was not only the author of subversive children's books; he also drew countless cartoons and caricatures, and regularly wrote, directed, and filmed plays and screenplays. In "The Last Things," he combined drawing and theater: from the most suitable of his caricatures, he created seventy-seven mini-dramas. And lo and behold, it works: Whether the shepherd dog is stuck in a cleaning bucket, God announces his spontaneous visit by phone ("God is on the line"), or the polar bear shows up at a poetry reading with a bottle of schnapps (Stage direction: A polar bear appears. He holds a schnapps bottle in one paw and a sign that reads: Have a shot of aquavit!), Waechter's sense of the absurd, his dry dialogues, and perfectly timed punchlines turn these small scenes into great (head) theater.
