Classical Modernism (1800 - 1960) unfolded in the tension between two poles: abstract, non-representational form and a hyper-focused capture of reality. At its beginning were lonely struggling individuals such as van Gogh, Munch, and Cézanne; at its end are artists as diverse as Mark Rothko and Francis Bacon. The hallmark of the epoch was a hitherto unknown dynamism in which the most diverse approaches responded to one another.
