In his columns, Lukas Bärfuss addresses a variety of urgent questions of our time. He subjects these questions to his scrutinizing gaze in real-time in his columns from 2019/2020, for instance, when he marvels at what is actually new about the latest iPhone hitting the market: nothing significant. However, he then summarizes the groundbreaking events that have occurred in the few years since this phone has existed – since 2008, to be precise. The small and the large are interconnected in a surprisingly illuminating way. Bärfuss jumps between topics, sometimes being analytically cool, other times passionately arguing polemically, whether discussing Corona, women's rights, identity politics, the USA, China, Brexit, and repeatedly, Switzerland. He certainly acknowledges that constant change can instill fear in people, but he identifies stagnation as the greater danger. As a vigilant contemporary, he wants to intervene, as a keen observer and thoughtful individual who brings together the political and the poetic in the tradition of Heinrich Heine.
