Product details
After the fall of the Babylonian Empire, the Persian kings from the Achaemenid dynasty took control in the Near East and introduced a new cuneiform script - Old Persian. This script was in use from approximately the 6th to the 3rd century BC and disappeared after the conquest of the Persian Empire by Alexander the Great (after 330 BC). The antiquarian Franz Heinrich Weissbach (1865 - 1944) summarizes the most important cuneiform inscriptions from the Achaemenid period in a new translation in this volume. In addition to an overview of the significance of the inscriptions and issues related to transcription, Weissbach presents inscriptions from the kings Cyrus, Darius, Xerxes, and Artaxerxes. A detailed index of proper names concludes the work. This is a reprint of the original edition from 1911.
