People want to become teachers because they enjoy working with children. Beyond rational reasons, this study focuses on the backstage of career choice. Pierre Bourdieu's concepts of habitus, field, and their cultural fit are central to this analysis.

Using the method of sequential analytical habitus reconstruction, which builds on Bourdieu's work, the habitus of students in primary education is made visible. Their professional image and anticipated teaching actions also come to light.

This reveals a necessary dual fit in the career choice process: a fit with the demand logic of the originating field as well as with the demand logic of the desired professional field. This brings new insights to the research on career choice.
