Product details

Shelby and Meade want to get married. However, not everyone in the elite circle on Martha's Vineyard agrees with their union. Shelby comes from a Black family, while Meade is white.

Set on a summer day, Dorothy West tells the story of five generations of a Black family. Young Shelby, the apple of the Black community's eye on Martha's Vineyard, wants to marry New York jazz pianist Meade. But Meade is white and, in the eyes of the Cole family, has little to offer. Shouldn't it be a man from their own ranks instead? The island community consists of an elite circle of the Black bourgeoisie. There is a strong fear of change here, rooted in long years of oppression. In the end, Shelby must make the decision of whether to follow her heart and where it will lead her.

The rediscovery of a great classic of African American literature.
