This anthology, which brings together in particular studies by French and English scholars, forms a unique combination with the volume "Aus der Zeit der Verzweiflung. Zur Genese und Aktualität des Hexenbildes" (es 840) forms a factual and programmatic unit. He approaches the topic with methods of social history. "Only the witches of the Christian Occident fell victim to a hypertrophic persecution mania at the transition from the Middle Ages to the modern age, the particularity of which is not made more understandable by the reference "to witch-like phenomena" in other cultures.
