The conference proceedings focus on one of the most innovative and influential Protestant groups of the 18th and 19th centuries. The Moravian Church, founded in 1727, developed under the leadership of Count Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf (1700-1760) into an avant-garde project of early modern Protestantism in Europe. This was significantly contributed to by an open understanding of the church that welcomed other denominations, the relativization of class and gender differences, new forms of piety, and a pronounced regional and international mobility. The volume addresses the history and impact of the Moravian Church in Central, Eastern, and Northern Europe, as well as in North and South America, with an unprecedented breadth of scholarship. The 35 essays in the volume are organized into six sections, encompassing not only theology and history but also contributions from fields such as linguistics, natural history, historical geography, architecture, musicology, and digital humanities.
