Dante's Comedy, which was first called divine by Boccaccio, depicts a journey through the three realms of the afterlife. The Roman poet Virgil guides the author, who is also his own main character, through Hell and Purgatory. His enchanting childhood friend Beatrice leads him through Paradise. Their goal is the understanding of love and the vision of God. Along their way, they encounter countless souls of the deceased, who recount their fates on Earth, including famous historical figures such as Barbarossa, Horace, and Ovid.
