Die Gödel'schen Unvollständigkeitssätze

In 1931 an article appeared in the Monthly Bulletin of Mathematics and Physics with the mysterious sounding title Über formally unentscheidbare Sätze der Principia Mathematica und verwandte Systeme I . In this work Kurt Gödel proved two incompleteness theorems which have fundamentally changed our view of mathematics. Gödel's theorems manifest that there is a gap between the concept of truth and the concept of provability that we cannot bridge. Mathematics does not fit into any formal corset. Since its discovery, incompleteness theorems have been on everyone's lips and a flood of books has been devoted to their brilliant content. But hardly any work deals with Gödel's work in its original form - and there are good reasons for this: His complex chains of argumentation, described with meticulous precision, the many definitions and sentences.
