The Story of the Hare and the Hedgehog" is suitable for reading at the end of the first or second grade in several ways. The fabulous, easily accessible plot is carried by a few, childlike main characters: There is the likeable, clever hedgehog with his wife - and the stuck-up rabbit, who thinks he is invincible, but is proven wrong. Willi Fährmann's simple, clear language as well as the variation of the ending (the rabbit falls to the ground exhausted, but does not have to die) facilitate the childlike approach to the story.
The children's motivation to read is promoted not least by the attractive design of the book: Clever, colourful illustrations adorn every double page; the large font and the careful line breaks according to the steps of meaning help to read fluently.
