Hemingway's only play, written in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War, revolves around espionage and counter-espionage in besieged Madrid. On the surface, Philip Rawlings is a jaded American war correspondent, but secretly he is fighting as a Republican agent against fascist infiltration. His resolve begins to crumble when his lover, Dorothy Bridges, an American war reporter, forces Philip to make an impossible choice: he must choose between her and his duty.
