They had to flee to save their lives. But they left behind their most precious possession. In her holiday cottage on the idyllic Danish island of Funen, vacationer Celia discovers a beautiful lilac painting that had been considered lost for decades. Her landlady is deeply moved at the sight of the painting and tells Celia the story of her mother, the Jewish painter Ruth Liebermann. In 1938: The newly married couple Ruth and Jakob Liebermann must flee from Berlin, finding refuge in Funen at Ruth's family's former summer house. Despite the difficult situation, they experience happy years, and Ruth is even able to support the family with her passion for painting. When they are forced to flee once again, Ruth and Jakob must make the most consequential decision of their lives.
