Accident insurance is the only branch of social insurance that is exclusively financed through risk-based premiums. This paper examines whether the design of the insurance premiums by accident insurers is compatible with the modified central content of the general design principles of social insurance law. The principles considered include the principle of solidarity, the principle of equivalence, the insurance principle, the principle of transparency, and the principle of reciprocity. The premium rating in accident insurance is only partially compatible with the examined design principles. For instance, the level of solidarity in accident insurance cannot be compared to the level of solidarity in other branches of social insurance. Furthermore, regarding the principle of transparency in premium rating, there is a need for action identified.
