Eleven-year-old Sarah, the well-protected daughter of wealthy landowners, receives an unusual birthday gift in Charleston, tied with a violet ribbon - the ten-year-old Hetty "Handful," who is meant to serve as her maid. However, Sarah teaching the black girl how to read is something her parents did not expect.
