This work deals with one of the most significant principles of the German criminal process since the introduction of the StPO: the principle of immediacy. Recently, this procedural principle has undergone various changes, raising concerns that the principle of immediacy has significantly lost its importance or even been undermined. The author first examines different problem areas, such as the use of video technology in main hearings or the knowledge of lay judges regarding case files, in relation to the current significance of the procedural principle in these areas. He uses the results obtained there to draw an overall conclusion. This conclusion is then contrasted with current demands for further changes to the StPO that would affect the principle of immediacy.
