Author's Note
Sten Nadolny, born in 1942 in Zehdenick on the Havel River, lives in Berlin. He has received several awards for his work, including the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize in 1980, the Hans Fallada Prize in 1985, the Premio Vallombrosa in 1986, the Ernst Hoferichter Prize in 1995, and the Weilheim Literature Prize in 2010. After his literary debut "Netzkarte," the novel "Die Entdeckung der Langsamkeit" was published in 1983, which has been translated into all world languages and has become a modern classic of German literature. Following that, Sten Nadolny published the novels "Selim oder Die Gabe der Rede," "Ein Gott der Frechheit," "Er oder ich," the "Ullsteinroman," and most recently the book "Putz- und Flickstunde," which he co-wrote with Jens Sparschuh.
Blurb
"Die Entdeckung der Langsamkeit" is at first glance both a seafaring novel and a story about adventure and the longing for it, as well as a coming-of-age story. However, Sten Nadolny has rewritten the biography of the English seafarer and Arctic explorer John Franklin (1786 - 1847) into a subtle study of time. "Nadolny and his John Franklin discover slowness as a humane principle. One could also say: the thoughtfulness, the careful handling of oneself and of things.".
