Die ehemalige Zisterzienserabtei von Szentgotthárd

The aim of this work is to present the Cistercian Abbey of Szentgotthárd, conceived and newly built from the ground up by the Austrian architect Franz Anton Pilgram in the 18th century, through its architecture and artistic furnishings. After a brief description of the historical context, the first main part outlines the development of the abbey's history from its beginnings in the 12th century to its dissolution in the 20th century. Following this, the work of architect Pilgram is discussed, and finally, the Cistercian Abbey in Szentgotthárd is presented. In addition to an analysis of the design drawings for the monastery complex, the structure of the façade is described, and the architect's design language is explained. The second part addresses the interior furnishings of the church and the monastery building, primarily created by artists from the mother abbey in Heiligenkreuz and their collaborators. The description and analysis of the late Baroque total work of art provide a foundation for further specific investigations.
