Martin Suter, born in 1948 in Zurich, lives with his wife in Spain and Guatemala. He was an advertising copywriter and a successful advertiser, a profession he has repeatedly supplemented or interrupted with other writing activities. Among other things, he wrote GEO reports and numerous screenplays for film and television. Since 1991, he has been living as a freelance author, and since 1992 he has been writing the weekly column "Business Class" in Weltwoche.

On March 29, 2004, Martin Suter was awarded the Golden Diogenes Owl in Zurich.
