The dream of the modern contemporary to master the future has long since turned into a nightmare, as Friedrich Nietzsche recognized in Thus Spoke Zarathustra: "I flew too far into the future: a horror seized me. This encapsulates the aporia of our current secular understanding of time: being unable to transcend the time we inhabit—whether it involves being at the mercy of storms or plagues like the Corona pandemic, or having to struggle against global currents, as seen in the withdrawal of Western troops from Afghanistan. To interpret the signs of our time, mere contemporaneity is not enough. We must remain vigilant: For you do not know the day or the hour.
