Abstract: Since the play "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" Edward Albee has been considered one of the established American playwrights of his time. This play was first performed in New York City in 1962. At first glance, the audience might assume that this work depicts a failed marriage. However, upon closer examination of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?", it becomes clear that Edward Albee addresses far more than a typical marital crisis. The content of this paper is to discuss and elaborate on Albee's intentions for this play. First, Albee's biography will be addressed. This will be followed by an exploration of the historical context.
