Democracy needs broad recognition and is based on the participation of its citizens. In the present, diverse forms of political participation have developed as an expression of this participation. This can support democracy, but it can also be directed against it. Deliberative forms of participation are being consolidated in many European states. The increase in the discussion on citizens' councils alone illustrates the changing situation. The question is: What do citizens think about democracy and what role do they assume in democracy? Susanne and Gert Pickel answer this question using theories, empirical findings and current discourses. In addition, they impart relevant political science skills in a short and concise form.
