For which truth, which treasures is it worth dying? In a bloody battle, the English conquer Calais in 1347. The long war with France seems to be over. But for Thomas of Hookton, there is no rest. His search for the Holy Grail continues. It leads him to Gascony, to the castle of Astarac, which once belonged to his ancestors and now belongs to Guy Vexille, the murderer of his father. It is at this very place that the Grail was last seen. When Thomas reaches the castle, he witnesses a tragedy: a young woman is to be burned as a heretic. Thomas manages to save her from the stake, and they flee through a blood-soaked land, towards a battle that will not only decide life and death but also the future of Christendom.
