On a remote mountain farm in Norway's Gudbrand Valley, Edvard grows up with his taciturn grandfather Sverre. He has only a vague memory of his mother - a scent, a feeling of warmth, a blue skirt. Lars Mytting tells the story of a desperate search for the mother, the father, his own roots, and a journey that takes Edvard through foreign lands, encompassing his family history over an entire century: the century of great tragedies. Edvard's parents died when he was three years old. Their death is shrouded in mystery, as is the place where they died. This mystery also includes the fate of Einar, the grandfather's brother. All Edvard knows is that he was a master carpenter who went to Paris for training as a young man, leaving behind his workshop along with the forest of flame birches.
