Abstract: Almost no other text in Christian literature has been cited and interpreted as often, making it somewhat challenging to provide new research impulses in light of the overwhelming quantity of literature on the Sermon on the Mount. Furthermore, I had to narrow the focus of this work because it is not feasible to address all aspects of the Sermon on the Mount in a seminar paper. Therefore, I would like to highlight four key points: While the hermeneutical introductory questions take into account the historical-critical perspective and attempt to outline the level of the historical Jesus and the author, the summary overview of the two particularly prominent elements of the Sermon on the Mount, the Beatitudes and the Antitheses, will condense a summarized programmatic approach. Ultimately, this condensation forms a suitable basis for expanding the ethical interpretation canon of the Sermon on the Mount.
