Childhood is a place we keep returning to. Twelve-year-old Bean and her sister Liz are good at taking care of themselves – and they have to be. Because in their mother’s life, there’s only room for dreams, not for her daughters. Bean and Liz are not surprised when she once again flees after a fight. However, it’s new for her to disappear for weeks. Bravely, the two girls make their way across America from California to Virginia, where their lovable uncle awkwardly takes them in.
