At almost 500 years old, the Kaufungen Knighthood Foundation is the oldest foundation in Hesse. When it was founded in 1532 by Landgrave Philip the Magnanimous, it was unique in the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. The anthology begins with an account of the history of Kaufungen Abbey from a royal palatinate to the founding of the monastery by Kunigunde to the Reformation. This is followed by a detailed explanation of the development of the Althessian Knighthood from 1532 to the present day. The foundation, which is now a non-profit organisation, has survived historical catastrophes over the centuries. It also survived the time of the Kingdom of Westphalia ruled by Napoleon's brother Jerome, against whom some members of the Althessian Knighthood also unsuccessfully revolted during the so-called Dörnberg Uprising in 1809.
