Suonen are artificial irrigation channels in the Valais region that were created hundreds of years ago. Water was as vital then as it is today. Those who had water could irrigate their fields. Where water was lacking, it had to be brought in from elsewhere. Thus, the people of Valais developed the irrigation system of the Suonen. They tapped into glacier streams and directed the water through intricate channels to meadows and fields. In the Upper Valais, these water conduits are called Suonen, while in the Lower Valais, they are referred to as Bisses.

Many Suonen are still active, some have been lovingly restored, and the former paths of the water guardians are now popular hiking trails. Along the open water channels, a magnificent flora thrives, and the murmuring of the flowing water has a relaxing effect.
