Author text
Jacob Grimm was born in Hanau in 1785. He studied in Marburg and Paris. The Germanist worked as a professor in Göttingen but was dismissed from his post as co-author of the political protest of the Göttingen Seven. In 1841, the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV invited him and his brother Wilhelm Karl Grimm (1786-1863) to join the Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Jacob Grimm laid the foundation for German studies with his works Deutsche Grammatik und Geschichte der deutschen Sprache (German Grammar and History of the German Language), which are based on in-depth source research. He edited the first volumes of the German Dictionary founded by him and Wilhelm Grimm. Together with his brother and K. Lachmann, Jacob Grimm is considered the actual founder of German philology. Jacob Ludwig Carl and Wilhelm Karl Grimm are the well-known editors of the "Kinder- und Hausmärchen" (Children's and Household Tales). Jacob Grimm died in Berlin in 1863.
