Reading is a cultural technique that is itself subject to constant change due to rapid technological change. The reading activity that now predominantly takes place in the digital world differs in part from the traditional reception of printed texts. For example, reading on a screen harbours the risk of less depth of processing. At the same time, much greater attention must be paid to linking information from multiple texts and to checking the quality and credibility of texts.
However, the digital age also opens up potential for the diagnosis and promotion of reading skills and reading comprehension. New approaches are possible that increase the learning effect through direct feedback, make the learning process visible and open up sources of information that cannot be captured when reading on paper. In addition to a reflection on the current state of research, the volume also provides an overview of currently available methods and online platforms.
