Product details

To circle something has historically meant to take possession of it. The legends surrounding this are numerous. For instance, the farmer who leads his son around his land in a ritual act: Look, this will one day belong to you. Wolfgang Büscher has done nothing different – he has circled his land and thus claimed it for himself. He was on the road for three months. On foot, by bus, hitchhiking, or even by ship, depending on what came his way. He sets off from the Rhine and, following the borders, travels 3,500 kilometers around Germany. He traverses both well-known and almost forgotten regions. Time and again, mythical places lie along his path, whether it's Helgoland, Peenemünde, or Neuschwanstein. He encounters characters he thought were merely fictional, such as the castle lord who leads a double life on the Bohemian border, or the smuggler Orlando in the Kleinwalsertal. In the end, Büscher has experienced a country that is infinitely more quirky and peculiar than we all believe. A journey like a long-forgotten dream – brilliantly narrated and full of discoveries.
