Der zweite oberösterreichische Bauernaufstand 1594-1597 im Mühlviertel

The Upper Austrian peasant revolt of 1594 to 1597 was one of the largest early modern subject revolts in the territory of present-day Austria. After an introductory presentation of the manorial and ecclesiastical division of the Mühlviertel at the end of the 16th century, the author attempts to provide an event-historical overview based mainly on sources, from the initial expulsions of Catholic clergymen to the smaller warlike conflicts and the protracted negotiations and violent punitive expedition at the end of the revolt. In a systematic part, the questions of the cause of the revolt, the objectives, the legitimacy and the social structure of the insurgents are explored.
