The 32-year-old psychoanalyst Luke Rhinehart is bored with his life, which seems to him like an endless variation of the same theme. One day, he discovers the dice roller within himself. After a poker night, he sees a die under a card. Suddenly, the thought occurs to him to rape his neighbor, the wife of his colleague, if the die shows a 1. The odds are 1 in 5. The improbable happens, and when Luke finds himself back in his apartment three-quarters of an hour later, he feels immensely relieved. "Rolling the dice means believing" becomes his motto from then on, and thus wives, affairs, and colleagues are confronted with the dice theory in all situations of life.
