Der Wisent

A small town in the heart of Poland and two men on the brink of retirement who never intended to leave their homeland: Heniek and Andrzej, a mechanic and a carpenter, set off from Gajerudki and follow the A2, the "Highway of Freedom," westward. They want to bring back Beatka, who went to the Netherlands for seasonal work and has now left her husband Heniek after 36 years of marriage without giving him a reason. However, when the two friends get stranded in Germany after a wildlife accident, they embark on a detour through the despised Europe and their previous self-understanding. Andrzej and Heniek come to know their depths anew - and, when they encounter a bison, also their past. A story with a compelling pull, told in a tone that is sometimes tragically comic and coarse, sometimes succinctly legendary.
