While there were already special markets in December during the Middle Ages, it was only when Christmas evolved from a purely religious celebration to a civic festival in the 18th century, and later during the Romantic period when people were overwhelmed by impressions while strolling through the market lanes, passing by sweet-smelling, diverse sugar and marzipan pastries, all shining in bright colors, that the Christmas market became popular throughout Europe. When even the smallest town illuminates itself with cozy lights, evergreen decorations, and snow-covered wooden stalls in December, the anticipation of Christmas permeates the sweetest scents of mulled wine and touches every heart.
