The representative of the public interest can act as a special litigant in administrative court proceedings. This paper examines the fundamental question of whether there is any need at all for this institution in addition to the other litigants. It first analyses, on the basis of the law, the tasks assigned to the representative of the federal interest at the Federal Administrative Court (VBI) as well as his procedural powers. Closely connected to this is an examination of what exactly is meant by the "public interest". The work deals with the question of the extent to which the institution of the VBI is a special feature of the VwGO in distinction to other types of proceedings. It also examines its organisation and functioning in practice. Finally, it discusses whether the VBI actually fulfils the tasks assigned to it by law and whether its existence is still justified today.

"The Representative of Public Interest in German Administrative Jurisdiction": The Representative of Public Interest is an institution which can be part of specific proceedings in administrative jurisdiction in Germany. First of all, the thesis treats the tasks and procedural rights of this institution. Furthermore, it illuminates the meaning of the term "public interest" as well as the Representative's organisation and work in practice. As a conclusion, it discusses the question, if the existence of the Representative of Public Interest is obsolete, reasonable or even necessary.
