The question of human compassion is the question of what it means to be human. Our compassion is in a poor state. What is the reason for this? As the book shows, it relates to the way we grow up, to the history of our childhood. It concerns the terror that children are subjected to, and the tipping point of that terror: In the end, our civilization idealizes those who are cold and who can no longer perceive the child—and the child within themselves. The political consequences are catastrophic: People do not develop their own identity; they identify with power or the powerful.
